Are You Keeping Your New Year’s Cleaning Solutions?

New Year’s Resolutions can be hard to keep. Only a few weeks ago, many of you were making lists, getting ready to take your life in a fresh new direction, filled with new successes in the coming year. And while some of you may be still moving forward in positive ways, others have already given up on those New Year’s plans. If your New Year’s cleaning resolutions were a bit ‘over the top’ – so much so that you couldn’t keep up the pace, let’s explore some simpler resolutions you can easily keep all year long resulting in a clean, organized home!

One Big Clean

This time of year is the perfect time to perform your “One Big Clean.” In truth, you may need to do the “One Big Clean” twice a year, but even so, you can set aside two days a year to get the job done, right? Pick your day, and go room by room, starting with the rooms in your home that experience the most traffic on a daily basis. Start high and work your way down, dusting, wiping, scrubbing, mopping, vacuuming – whatever the situation calls for – and when you are done, you home will once again look like new!

Adopt These Tiny Tidy Tasks

These tiny tidy tasks only take minute or two, but as they become habits, you’ll see a big difference in the overall cleanliness of your home. Here are some ideas to start with, though you can add more as you go throughout the year.

  1. Make your bed each day.
  2. Put away clothes each night. This may mean tossing them into the hamper if they’re dirty or hanging them back up if they can be worn again. Never hang them on bedpost, toss them on the chair, or pile them in the floor.
  3. Clear the table after you eat and wipe away messes. Wash the dishes or put them in the dishwasher. And once they are clean, put them away.
  4. While you’re in the kitchen, clear clutter from the table and countertops each evening. Since you’re decluttering already, take five minutes or so to put away any items around the house which haven’t made their way back to their proper places.
  5. Dust one room in the house every day of the week.

The Annual Home Purge

When you have a few minutes, take a look around. You probably see items which you haven’t used in a long time, maybe as long as a year or more. Now, ask yourself if you really need that item especially if you can’t remember the last time you used it. If you no longer need it, this may be the perfect time to begin your annual home purge event. Don’t try to do it all at once, but instead, be methodical and make the project management by working through one room at a time until your entire home has been purged of items you no longer need.

Now, what do you do with all those items you’ve purged? Make two piles. One will include the  which can be thrown away because they are worn, stained, broken, etc. The second pile will be those items suitable for donation to a worthy charity.

The bonus here: Your home will now be even easier to keep clean!
