Fall Cleaning Tips

Fall has arrived, and while “fall cleaning” hasn’t gained the popularity of its counterpart “Spring Cleaning,” it is just as important. This year, with so many spending more time at home due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the challenge to effectively fall clean is even greater. Plus, there’s the upcoming holidays where many hope to once again welcome close friends and family into their homes for cozy meals and small holiday gatherings.

Getting your home clean and preparing for the months ahead means cleaning out clutter, but also removing dust, allergens, debris, and more which have accumulated with everyone working and schooling at home. A deep cleaning this fall means you are prepared for the holidays and the winter season ahead and ready to welcome family and friends into your home. To help you with the task, Signature Maids delivers this helpful checklist and is standing by should need any assistance in accomplishing the task!

Clean Out the Clutter

Decluttering in Fall, like in Spring, is a great starting point for your “fall cleaning.” When everyone is home more, which has been the case for most of this year, clutter accumulates fast. Start in the kitchen, ridding yourself of worn out dishtowels, expired spices, condiments, and other sundry products. Next, head to the bathrooms, ridding your spaces of expired medications, worn towels, old makeup, and more. In both the kitchen and bathroom, while you are cleaning out clutter is the ideal time to wipe down shelving and reorganize the items you are keeping. Get the entire family involved as you move to declutter each bedroom, including closets, dressers, and nightstands. Toss worn clothing and donate those pieces which no longer fit, while you get rid of the broken or outgrown toys. Lastly, have everyone work together to clear the clutter in all your common spaces – papers, mail, magazines, newspapers, and other “junk” – that has accumulated since you last decluttered.

Fall Window Cleaning

Fall and winter bring less natural light due to shorter days. Letting in all the natural light possible means cleaning windows in the fall just like you did in the spring. Grab your favorite class cleaner and a clean microfiber cloth and let the window cleaning begin. Fall is also the perfect time to clean your window treatments, blinds, and shades. Be sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning. For example, vinyl or other washable shades or blinds can be cleaned simply with soap and water, while fabric, cotton, or canvas materials should be dusted or vacuumed. Special window treatments may require dusting, vacuuming, or washing, while others may need a trip to the local dry cleaners for cleaning.

Deep Cleaning in Autumn

Deep cleaning, just like you did in the spring, should be a semi-annual event also done in the fall. Start at the top and work your way down. Begin by cleaning ceiling light fixtures, dusting ceiling fans, and ridding the high spaces of smudges and cobwebs. Next, dust the walls, followed by washing and rinsing as needed. Using a microfiber cloth, dry the walls. Vacuum your carpeting and your upholstered furniture. Should deep carpet or upholstery cleaning be required, you’ll need to decide if you want to D-I-Y it or let the Signature Maids get the job done for you. Next, clean your hard surface flooring with care, always following manufacturer’s directions depending on the surface.

If you have a fireplace, fall is the time to have your chimney inspected and cleaned. While not cleaning, autumn is the ideal time change batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as replace HVAC filters.
