Have a Home Gym – How to Keep it Clean

A home gym is a great addition to any home, helping you keep in shape, with the added convenience of working out anytime you want. With a home gym, you don’t have to adhere to gym hours, there’s no driving involved, and you don’t have to wait to use the equipment you want. At home, you work out when you want, but like every other space in your home, you have to keep it clean. Gym equipment isn’t like cleaning the rest of your home, and some pieces even need special treatment. This list of tips will help you keep your home gym and its equipment looking and smelling great and lasting for years to come.

Dusting Comes First

As with the rest of your home, dusting is a great place to start cleaning your home gym. Clean air is important all over you home, including your home gym where you are exerting yourself, getting your heart rate up and your lungs expanded. Removing dust from all the surfaces can be easily achieved with a soft, microfiber cloth which traps dust and keeps it from spreading around. As will all rooms in your home, work top down to be the most effective at ridding your home gym of dust. While you dust, inspect the hardware – cables, screws, nuts, and other hardware which can wear out or come loose through everyday use.

Wiping Down Your Gym

After dusting, clean your equip with your favorite general all purpose cleaner, which is ideal for handles, grips, rails, and other components. If you don’t have a favorite cleaner, you can make your own using vinegar, baking soda, and water. Mix your solution well, add a few drops of anti-fungal/anti-microbial essential oil and keep your solution in a handy spray bottle. With your cleaner at hand, you can easily wipe down your equipment following each workout.

Cleaning Away Grime on Weights and Other Gym Accessories

Your weights, including free weights, kettle bells, as well as gym accessories, like stability balls, bands, often get grimy as a result of everyday handling. Clean your weights and other accessories with a warm soapy water and soft, clean microfiber cloths. The process is simple, wet your cloth, wring it, and wipe down all the surfaces you regularly touch in your home gym.  Once wiped, take a fresh, dry cloth and make sure all surfaces are dried thoroughly. Your Yoga/Exercise Mat will also need cleaning regularly. It’s a good idea to check your mat for manufacturer’s instruction for cleaning as some can be machine washed, while others will have to be scrubbed/wiped with soap and water.

Keeping Clean Towels on Hand

It’s important to keep your home gym stocked with clean towels in a few handy sizes, along with your spray bottle of cleaner. With these in place, you’ll be able to wipe equipment, weights, and accessories, and keep your home gym smelling fresh and clean.

Mirrors, Windows, and Floors

Your favorite window cleaner or a solution of water and vinegar is all you need to keep mirrors and windows clean and free from dust, fingerprints, and smudges. After spraying, a squeegee is the ideal way to remove the cleaning solution, but newspaper or a microfiber cloth also works well. Cleaning your home gym’s floor is different depending on the material. Carpet will need vacuuming as well as steam cleaning a few times a year. Hardwood flooring or tile can be swept, vacuumed, and mopped.
