Spring is Here! Cleaning Tips for Allergy Sufferers

Spring is here! And while many welcome the arrival of spring with the beauty of budding trees and flowers, allergy sufferers ‘welcome’ the season with stuffy heads, itchy eyes, sneezes, and runny noses! Allergies are no fun, as any one who suffers from allergies will attest. Being outside during allergy season can be a challenge, but inside there are some actions you can take to make the season easier to handle for the allergy sufferers who live there. Here are some cleaning tips to keep allergies at bay and help your family members who suffer from allergies.

Declutter – The more ‘things’ you have, including clutter, the more area you have for dust and allergens to accumulate. Get rid of all the items you don’t need and you’re off to a great start ridding your home of dust, mites, and other allergens.

Dust – Dusting your home on a weekly basis helps keep dust and allergens from collecting on your surfaces and causing allergic reactions. Use microfiber clothes and dusters to eliminate as much dust as possible. If you are the one who does most of the cleaning and are also an allergy sufferer, you’ll want to wear a dust mask when getting the job done.

Vacuum – Following dusting your home, vacuuming regularly is a great way to keep dirt, dust, pet dander, mites, and other allergens out of your home. Using a vacuum with an integrated HEPA filter is even better, filtering out 99 plus percent of dust and allergens.

More on HEPA Filters – HEPA filters, as mentioned, filter out a number of the dust and allergens in your home, helping those with allergies. If allergies are a big problem in your home, consider adding an air purifier with a HEPA filter to keep allergens, dust, dirt, and other contaminants out of the air.

Taking Care of the Laundry – Laundry, the never ending household chore, is even more important during allergy season. Your clothing is a collector of dust mites, pollen, dust, and other allergens, as are your bedding and sheets. Wash your bedding weekly and your clothing as needed, making sure not to let it pile up! Doing so will kill dust mites and allergens, while keeping laundry fresh and clean. Take care not to air dry laundry which accumulates dust and allergens and always choose unscented allergy detergents.

More on Cleaning Products – Cleaning products, like laundry detergent can cause allergic reactions. Choosing unscented or all natural products can help reduce allergic reactions.

Mold – The bathroom is the most common area you think of when mold is mentioned, but any are of your home where a damp or moist environment exists can be an ideal home for mold. And mold can cause a flare-up for allergy sufferers. To make sure your home is mold free, always wipe away any water you see. Should you detect mold forming, get rid of it quickly. If moisture is a problem in your area , you might want to consider a dehumidifier to rid your home of excess moisture and keep mold away!

A Word on Pets – Though you love your furry, four-legged family members, allowing pets on the bed means the spread of allergens, dust, and pet dander. Get your pets their own cushy beds to sleep on and help keep your allergies away!
