Thoroughly Cleaning Your Bedroom

Your bedroom is your peaceful retreat at the end of a long, hard day; the room that bids you welcome and carries you into blissful relaxation each evening. Isn’t it?

Certainly, it should be, but often the bedroom is something short of idyllic. It instead becomes a home office, a television viewing room, a homework haven, a laundry room, and even the dumping ground of school papers that need to be signed, bills, magazines, newspapers, and more. The clutter arises, making cleaning a virtual impossibility and then comes the dust and grime!

Priority One – Cleaning the Bedroom

In truth, keeping your bedroom clean and neat should be a top priority on your house cleaning agenda, after all you spend much of your time there – or you would if it were the blissful retreat you want it to be! Now is the perfect time to take the steps to thoroughly clean your bedroom and make the ideal peaceful haven for relaxation.

Starting at the Top

Dust and dust mites are one of the biggest concerns in the bedroom – from the ceiling fan to the carpets to the linens. Dust mites, along with pollen from the outdoors, an aggravate allergies and cause a host of health issues. When you begin cleaning from the top, by the time you reach ground level, you will have captured all the dust and grime that trickles to the floor as you work.

Before you begin cleaning, take a few minutes to put away clean clothing, take dirty laundry to the laundry room, and put other items in their proper places. Now gather your tools – a dusting cloth or feather duster, step stool or ladder, appropriate cleaners, and cleaning cloths. Start with ceiling – dusting light fixtures and fan blades thoroughly.  Next, spray and wipe the blades and light fixtures with your cleaner and cloth. If you find the light fixtures resistant to your efforts, take the down and wash them in the sink with warm soapy water. Dry them well before returning them to their proper place. Now is a great time to replace light bulbs that have burned out.

While you still have the ladder or step stool, wipe the door and window frames. If you have blinds, you will want to dust them thoroughly and if they need a bit more cleaning that dusting can impart, this is perfect time to take them down and wash them with warm water and gentle detergent. If you have curtains, launder them or take them to the dry cleaners. If you have recently done so, you can freshen them up by shaking or vacuuming the dust off.

Going Down

Now, look at all the items lying around the room. Grab a garbage bag and donate or toss out anything you don’t want or need. If you keep something find it an appropriate place to stay. Next, take the linens off the bed and get them washing in the machine. While washing, dust and wipe down the tables and nightstands, the dresser along with the wardrobe and entertainment center. Once cleaned, use furniture polish to brighten up the wood. Next, dust the windowsills, if you haven’t already. Clean all the windows and mirrors with glass cleaner and a clean cloth. Dust off lamps, the television or computer screen, and other items you have as part of your décor.

Floor Level

Now come the baseboards. Begin by dusting or vacuuming, and if you find some resistant dust, use a damp cloth with your cleaner to get the job done. Vacuum any upholstered furniture in the room as well as the carpet. If smells are a concern, sprinkle baking soda on the carpet before vacuuming. If you have wood or tile floors, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your floor.

And one last step, put the freshly laundered linens back on the bed and admire your handiwork! You now have a clean and beautiful bedroom to retreat to and enjoy.
