Tips for Removing Makeup from Sheets and Pillowcases

Accidents can happen anytime, and rubbing off the makeup on sheets and pillowcases is reasonably common. Unfortunately, removing makeup from sheets and pillowcases can be a bit tricky, but with the right approach, you can effectively get rid of those stubborn stains. If this has happened to you and you want to avoid ruining your favorite sheets or pillowcases, here are some tips to help you remove makeup from your bedding:

  • Pretreat The Stain

Before washing, pretreat the makeup stain with a stain remover or liquid laundry detergent. Apply a small amount directly to the stain and gently rub it in using your fingers or a soft brush. Wait for a few minutes to allow the stain remover to penetrate the fabric. Once you have pretreated the stain, it's time to wash the sheets and pillowcases.

Follow the care instructions on the fabric label and wash them as you normally would. Use the recommended water temperature and laundry detergent. If the stain persists after washing, try using a stain remover designed for removing makeup stains. Follow the instructions on the product and rewash if necessary.

  • Use Makeup Remover Wipes

If the stain is fresh, you can try using a makeup remover wipe to gently dab and lift the makeup from the fabric. Be careful not to rub too vigorously, as this can spread the stain and make a bad situation worse. If you are working with white sheets and pillowcases, you may be better off with spot treatment.

  • Spot Treatment

For particularly stubborn stains, you can try spot-treating with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and dish soap. Hydrogen peroxide is an effective cleaning agent and can be found in most grocery stores. Apply the mixture to the stain, let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse thoroughly before laundering.

  • Apply Dish Soap

For oily or greasy makeup stains, apply a small amount of dish soap directly to the stain. Gently rub the stained area using your fingers or a soft brush, then rinse with cold water. Alternatively, you fill a sink with warm water and add laundry detergent to it. Place the stained area of the sheet or pillowcase into the water and let it soak for about 15-30 minutes. This will help loosen the stain.

  • Check Before Drying

After washing, inspect the sheets and pillowcases before drying them. If the stain is still visible, repeat the pretreating process or consider using a stain remover specifically formulated for tough stains. If you are unable to remove the stain after a couple of washes, consider contacting professional cleaning services.

  • Air Dry if Needed

If the stain persists or if you're unsure if it's fully removed, avoid putting the sheets and pillowcases in the dryer. The heat from the dryer can set the stain. Instead, hang them to air dry and recheck the stain once they are completely dry.

  • Bonus Tip

Act quickly! The sooner you address the stain, the easier it will be to remove. Try not to let the makeup sit on the fabric for too long. Alternatively, if you are unsure about how to approach cleaning makeup stains, consider seeking help from professional cleaners to help you.
