Cleaning Hard to Reach Places with Ease

Dust, grime, along with bacteria and germs love to hide in hard to reach places where cleaning requires a little added effort and the proverbial ‘elbow grease’. These hard to reach places are often so tough to get to that you avoid cleaning them. The result, you eventually have to get in there and clean, and because you’ve been avoiding or ignoring the space, the cleaning is all the more difficult. Did you know there are great ways to reach those out of the way places like the top of your cabinets, behind the toilet, and much more.

First of all,  you won’t need to run out and invest a load of new equipment, though having the right tools will help you get the job done more quickly and effectively. If you don’t have one, invest in an inexpensive duster (perfect for electronics and other tight spots), as well as a package of microfiber cloths (excellent at eliminating the tiniest of dust particles). A sturdy and safe step stool is also a must for getting to those hard to reach places. If your home has high ceilings, you’ll probably need a ladder. If you do, always have a helper on hand to hold the ladder while you work.

When cleaning those hard to reach spots and for general cleaning as well, remember to clean high then low. Always starting at the top ensures if dust or grime falls down, you’ll still get it when you reach the floor level. If you start at the bottom and work your way up,  you risk dirtying up areas you’ve already cleaned.

Now, let’s get cleaning!

Ceilings, Chandeliers, and Ceiling Fans

On the ceiling or at the wall and ceiling joints and corners, spiders love to work. Dust seems to settle these cobwebs. Your duster or ‘dust mop’ can easily rid your home of these unsightly dust catchers. Don’t have a duster or ‘dust mop’, then tie a painter’s brush to your mop handle and clean away. These also work well for cleaning chandeliers and other hanging light fixtures. Cleaning your ceiling fan can be tricky, but if you use the attachment designed to fit around the blades, you’ll find your ceiling fans stay clean, beautiful, and efficiently functional. If you haven’t cleaned your ceiling fans in some time, especially if you can’t remember the last time, you may want to slip a pillowcase over the blade and use it to catch the dust as you wipe the blades clean.

Cabinets

While you probably wipe your cabinet doors and shelves regularly, the cabinet tops tend to be neglected. Dust, grime, and other unmentionables often find there way on to the tops of your cabinets creating a gross sticky mess that is hard to clean. When you’re ready to tackle this job, grab your favorite grease fighting dish detergent, a damp sponge, and a clean rag. The detergent and sponge will remove the grime, so the clean rag can clear away the mess.

The Toilet (Behind it to be Specific)

In all likelihood, you clean your toilet weekly, wiping inside and out, where you can see the stains and grime. But do you go in deep and clean behind the toilet every time? Probably not! The truth is the more you avoid it back there, the  worse it becomes to clean when you absolutely have to do the job. When you do your weekly cleaning, wipe the area as you clean, avoiding the need to scrub, disinfect, and remove mold and mildew later.
